At 20 Finch Dental we love seeing children at our practice and we look forward to seeing kids’ faces light up with smiles. We do our very best to help our children patients feel happy and positive about their visits. We see kids of all ages – from infants and toddlers to young children, tweens, and teens. 20 Finch Dental recommends that parents bring children to the dentist for their first visit soon after the first baby tooth comes in.

We work hard to make each dental visit fun and child orientated. We want their experience to be positive so they enjoy looking after their smiles for life.

  • Children should see a dentist as soon as their first teeth erupt after the age of one. It is best to make a morning appointment for your child as children are generally more cooperative in the morning.

  • We do an assessment if the teeth are developing properly and look out for signs of hidden decay. We may need to polish your child’s teeth if they have an overgrowth of bacteria on their teeth. Remember to make the first appointment sound positive and don’t use dental visits as punishments. Try not to let your child listen to scary stories at the dentists. Do not bribe your child into going for his first visit. Make your child understand that having his teeth and gums checked is good for him or her. Bribes may appear to children as ways of making them do something that may hur

Bridges

Dental bridges are used to fill the gap when one or more tooth is missing. Bridges are a fixed solution to maintain a natural appearance and normal function of the mouth.

  • Replacing the gap left behind by missing teeth is important for a healthy dental appearance and function. When a tooth is missing, the other teeth will shift and fill the space, leading to an accumulation in plaque and later, gum disease. Missing teeth can also lead to dysfunctional chewing and problems with the joints associated with mastication. Installation of a bridge can fill the void of a missing tooth and assure a healthy bite. The bridge will also help you restore your beautiful smile and maintain the shape of your face.

There are two types of dentures available, a complete, which is needed when the patient no longer has any teeth in the mouth and a partial, for when there only few missing teeth. It’s important to keep in mind patients of any age may require dentures. Your dentist will evaluate your condition and customize a new set of teeth just for you.

Veneers

Veneers are thin ceramic, porcelain or composite shells, which are bonded to the front of teeth to improve their appearance.

  • Veneers are a great solution to improving the look of your smile and the colour and shape of your teeth with minimal tooth reduction. For patients with gaps between their front teeth, veneers are a great option for closing the gap and improving the overall appearance of front teeth. Crowns

A crown is needed to improve the appearance of a tooth, restore a tooth to its natural shape and to strengthen a tooth and the patient’s bite.

  • Dental crowns are often used when a filling has become too large or worn, your tooth is cracked or damaged or following a root canal. Crowns are cemented into place and cover the area of the tooth, becoming its new surface, improving the appearance and function of your tooth. This type of restoration is sometimes referred to as a “cap” and is made out of porcelain, metal or both. During your visit our trained doctors will take diagnostic x-rays and moulds of your mouth to assess and treat each patient accordingly.

Inlays

Inlays and onlays are an alternative method to improving your tooth’s natural form. When there’s only slight damage to the tooth, inlays and onlays provide a complete treatment solution.

  • An inlay, which is similar to a filling, is used inside the cusp tips of the tooth; where an onlay involves more of a reconstruction, extending out over one or more of the cusps of the tooth. Inlays and onlays are a custom procedure and will often last longer than a filling. Your dentist will most likely use porcelain and composite due to their strength and appearance, which can match the colour of your natural teeth and go virtually unnoticed.

EXTRACTIONS

An extraction is when your dentist removes one or more of your teeth.

  • Your dentist may extract a tooth for various reasons such as, severe decay, advanced gum disease, impaction (such as wisdom teeth) or injury beyond repair. Once your tooth is extracted, you may experience difficulty in chewing, normal jaw function and problems with your temporomandibular joints, which may affect your overall dental health. Our doctors will offer the best alternatives and replacement options to maintain overall dental health.

  • There are two types of extraction, a simple and a surgical. Using a local anesthetic, and an instrument called an elevator and forceps, your dentist can perform a simple extraction. During a surgical extraction, an oral surgeon will make a small incision into your gum to remove the tooth and possibly surrounding bone. Your doctor will use a local anesthetic as well as general anesthesia to ensure your comfort.

ROOT CANALS

A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures. A root canal can save your natural tooth and prevent extraction.

  • Your dentist will perform a root canal when the root of your tooth becomes infected. Infection of the root, if left untreated, can cause deep decay, cracks and long-term damage. If you experience tooth pain and discomfort and have trouble chewing, a root canal may be needed. During a root canal procedure, your dentist will remove the infected, or dead root (pulp) from your tooth. First you will receive a local anesthetic, then your dentist will remove the infected area by creating an opening in the tooth. Once cleaned, your dentist will fill and seal the tooth with a filling. The tooth may also require a crown to help bring it back to normal form and function.

FILLINGS

20 Finch Dental is a silver/mercury/amalgam-free practice. Although many patients have these types of fillings, they are not particularly attractive. Silver fillings can sometimes lead to fracturing over time, however porcelain fillings can add strength to weakened teeth. Porcelain inlays/onlays and direct/indirect composites a almost unnoticeable in the mouth and very strong thanks to advanced bonding techniques available.

  • Porcelain, or composite resin restorations can be formulated to match the true colour of the rest of your teeth for a natural appearance. Resin fillings bond to teeth, unlike silver fillings, where the tooth is cut to create a uniformed fit.

ROOT CANALS

Most tooth decay occurs on the deep grooves on the surfaces of the back teeth. Your dentist may choose to apply a sealant to these areas to protect them from decay. Sealants are very thin epoxy resin-based plastic coatings that last years before reapplication is needed.

  • Applying sealants is a very short and simple procedure. Your dentist will clean your teeth, then apply a gel for a few moments, then wash the gel off and apply the sealant with a brush. It only takes a moment to dry. Both children and adults can benefit from sealants as they contain fluoride to protect every tooth from tooth decay.

SEDATION DENTISTRY

For some people just the mere thought of going to the dentist is enough to make them break into a sweat. Some avoid going to the dentists like a plague and would rather endure the pain and discomfort of a toothache than visit the dentist’s office. In fact, according to the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS) about 30% of the population feel afraid or anxious about going to the dentist. This fear prevents them from receiving necessary dental care that can affect not only their teeth but also their overall health.

  • Sedation dentistry is a gentle way to help patients with their anxiety while providing necessary dental care. 20 Finch Dental provides sedatives to help patients have a positive dental experience while remaining relaxed and calm. Many call it “sleep dentistry” because the medication makes people sleepy. With the exception of general anesthesia, however, most of the time patients are awake, active and can respond to instructions. Sedation dentistry simply helps manage pain and alleviate the patients fear and anxiety.

  • If you have always had the fear of dental procedures, Sedation Dentistry is an excellent option for you! 20 Finch Dental offers dental sedation to help you feel comfortable and anxiety-free during your visit. We offer gentle sedation dentistry that can be applied to most dental procedures from routine tooth cleaning to more complex dental surgeries.

    Sedation can be safely performed for both adults and children who have extreme dental phobia or those who are in for long and complex dental procedures. We also recommend sedation for patients who have a hard time controlling movements during dental procedures, such as people with Parkinson’s or Cerebral Palsy.

  • Oral Sedatives - Often in a form of pills or liquid, we recommend that you take this medication 30 to 60 minutes before the procedure. Oral medication will make you feel calm, relaxed and may also cause you to forget the procedure. To manage pain, your dentist will provide a local anesthetic during the dental procedure.

    Nitrous Oxide Sedation - Commonly known as “laughing gas”, breathing in nitrous oxide will allow you to feel relaxed, happy and stress-free during the dental procedure. We recommend this for short dental procedures as well as those with have a fear of needles.

    Intravenous Sedation - This type of sedation is delivered via IV or injection, usually in the hand or arm. Much like oral sedation, the IV medication is meant to make the patient feel calm and relaxed but will not alleviate pain so local anesthetics are applied during the dental procedure.

    Sedatives used to manage pain and anxiety during the treatment will wear off quickly after the procedure. Still, we strongly recommend that you have someone drive you home just to be on the safe side.

    General Sedation - is used for longer procedures, or if you have a lot of anxiety that might interfere with your treatment.

    You’ll be completely unconscious, have no pain, your muscles will be relaxed, and you’ll have amnesia from the procedure.

    The medication is given through a face mask or IV. The level of anesthesia depends on the procedure and the individual patient.
